(Augusta) Maine's
largest consumer health organization Consumers for Affordable Health Care
(CAHC), welcomes Andrea Irwin of Portland as its
new Health Policy Advocate and Coalition
Coordinator.
Andrea will primarily be
responsible for health care and coverage research and
policy analyses and collaborating with and
coordinating the work of Coalition partners. She
also serves as CAHC's liaison to the Maine Center for
Disease Control Cardiovascular Health Program. Her
position is especially crucial with the recent passing
of national health reform.
"I am very excited to join CAHC at this opportune
time now that health care reform has passed and we look
to the next steps of interpretation and
implementation. I look forward to helping Mainers
navigate these new laws to access affordable and high
quality health care," says Andrea.
Andrea has eight years of experience
working in law and policy advocacy. She
graduated magna cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa from Bates
College with a BA in History. She earned her Juris
Doctor at American University Washington College of Law
where she represented victims of domestic violence as a
student attorney for the Women and the Law Clinic.
Andrea clerked for the Honorable Warren M.
Silver of the Maine Supreme Judicial Court in Bangor
where she specialized in family law cases, including
parental rights, divorce, and child custody. She
has worked for several national advocacy groups on
federal judicial nominations and women's health.
At the National Women's Law Center (NWLC) she researched
and analyzed health policies and programs affecting
low-income women and their families, including Medicaid,
prenatal care, and state and federal health care
reform. She also helped to coordinate NWLC's
coalition efforts to reauthorize the State Children's
Health Insurance Program (SCHIP) and preserve parents'
coverage.
"It is thrilling to have someone with Andrea's
experience join our staff. She comes to us at a
time when Maine people can really use her expertise. We
know she will be an asset to us and Maine as we work
toward making sure consumer voices are represented as
the state implements federal health care reform," says
Mia Poliquin Pross, CAHC Director of Policy and
Operations.
Andrea grew up in Brewer, Maine and now lives in
Portland.
