CAHC trains
the Coalition Membership on the Patient
Protection & Affordable Care
Act
Staff from Consumers for Affordable Health
Care, Maine Equal Justice, and Alice Knapp
provided an overview of the PPACA for membership
at the May meeting. In particular, they
explained what the new law will mean for Mainers
with small businesses, non-profits, those who are
currently uninsured, and low-income people who may
be eligible for MaineCare. The new state health
insurance exchange and tax credits for individuals
were also reviewed. If you or your
organization is interested in hosting a similar
presentation, please contact Andrea Irwin, Health
Policy Advocate, at 622-7083 or airwin@mainecahc.org. |

Giving Real
Help to Maine
People
True Story: The
mom of a family of five called the HelpLine. Her
two younger children are eligible for MaineCare
but her husband, her 20 year old, and the caller
herself are not eligible because when her husband
worked at a paper mill he built up a small
retirement account. He was then deployed overseas
in the National Guard, became injured, lost his
job and the family's insurance. The caller's
husband has now become a college student and the
caller is a CNA, neither of which offers
insurance. This household could benefit greatly by
National Health Reform when the asset test
for Medicaid will be eliminated in 2014...but 2014
is still a long way away.
The HelpLine staff explained to
the caller about the possibility of eligibility
for free care, sliding scale health clinics, and
discount prescription drug programs.
Additionally, if she or her husband got
insurance, their 20 year old child may be able to
get coverage as a dependent on their policy thanks
to health care reform. This will not solve
all of their problems, but it may help them until
more of the desperately needed other Health
Care Reforms kick in.

CAHC Tracks Implementation of Federal
Health Care Reform
As part of our ongoing efforts to
monitor state and federal health policy, we've
been busy tracking the many provisions in the new
federal Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act
(PPACA). At the state level, the Advisory
Council on Health Systems' Development; the
Legislature's Joint Select Committee on Health
Care Reform and Implementation Opportunities; and
the Health Reform Implementation Steering
Committee are all contributing
to implementation efforts.
The legislative committee has
established a website for more information
on their work and public meeting schedule.
Please contact Andrea for more information or
to get involved in advocacy opportunities at
CAHC. |
