Women &Young Adults
Whether you are working or unemployed,
a low-income parent, a pregnant woman, or an individual
without children at home, you may be eligible for
free or low-cost health insurance.
Last updated in April 2008.
What
is covered?
MaineCare coverage is fairly comprehensive. It includes
nearly all health services -- doctor's visits and
treatment, hospital care, prescription drugs, physical
therapy, mental health services, and transportation
to doctor's appointments.
Pregnant
women
have long been eligible for special benefits under
MaineCare, and it is easy to qualify. For an expectant
single mother with one child already in the home,
for instance, you can earn up to $2,934 a month.
Assets are not counted. |

at that time, and your coverage will continue for
at least 60 days after giving birth. Children whose
mothers received MaineCare at the time they were born
continue to be eligible for one year, regardless of
family income.

Adults
(age 21-64) without children or without
children living at home, who are NOT disabled
and NOT pregnant.
There is a waiting list for coverage in this
category, due to the Federal Goverment's limits
on Medicaid spending for this group. If your
income is below the guidelines listed to the
right and certain assets do not exceed the limit,
you can send in a application to get on the
waiting list. Your house and surrounding
lot and car, for instance, are not counted as
assets. (See list of assets
not counted).
A call to the HelpLine at 1-800-965-7476
can help you determine if you qualify.

Applications
For
pregnant women, 19- and 20-year-olds, parents
and stepparents of children who receive MaineCare,
can use the simple, green, two-page application
used for children. Adults without children or
without children at home have a white, two page
application. For the elderly and those with
disabilities, a somewhat longer form is required.

Call
the HelpLine at 1-800-965-7476
to request an application.
This number is not a DHHS office, and no information
will be given out without your consent. They can help
you fill out the application, which can then be mailed
to the nearest DHHS office. You do not have to
apply in person.
You can keep your MaineCare coverage if you meet the
income and asset limits. If your income increases
over the guidelines, you may be eligible another program
called transitional MaineCare which provides an additional
six to 12 months of coverage - or four months if the
source of additional income is child support.
If you believe you qualify for benefits but have been
denied them, you should call your local DHHS office
and ask for a Fair Hearing. You can also call the
Help Line, 1-800-965-7476,
for advice.
