2008
Edition

Introduction
The following information is based
on
Maine programs and services
Finding
the right health care, even at the best of times,
can be difficult. If you've been laid off at work,
had a divorce in the family, or are experiencing a
major health problem, it can be even more challenging.
The purpose of this guide is to offer a basic overview
of health care in Maine - what programs are out there,
who they serve, and your choices in meeting your own
needs and those of family members.
As a citizen of Maine, you have the right to obtain
appropriate health care. The process can be complicated
and take patience, but there are people who can help.
This guide will help you find them.
The sections that follow cover public health care
programs for children,
parents/caretakers,
young
adults, adults
without children, pregnant
women and the elderly
or disabled.
It also has sections on hospital
care, prescription
drugs, private
health insurance
and some basic information on
the Dirigo
Health Program.
Help is available for many Mainers who need it. It
is often as close as a telephone call, and this guide
will explain who to call, and how to find out what
you need to know. Phone numbers are listed on many
pages of the guide. If you don't find what you need
there, look at the listings in the Resource
Directory at the end of this guide. The
Resource
Directory also contains information on
a number of local, state and national programs not
mentioned elsewhere in the guide.
