Consumers for Affordable Health Care (CAHC) celebrates tonight’s strong victory for health care and coverage for all people in our state. Given the results on Question 2 in today’s referendum election, CAHC calls on Maine’s leaders to swiftly and fully implement Medicaid expansion.
“Mainers have spoken,” said Steve Butterfield, policy director at CAHC. “They join the Legislature, which has passed Medicaid expansion bills five times, to send a clear message. They are tired of leaving money on the table and tired of watching our federal tax dollars stay in DC. They are ready to make smart investments in our people, our health, our hospitals, and our economy here at home.”
With the passage of Question 2, an estimated 80,000 working class Maine people who currently have no access to affordable coverage will be eligible for Medicaid. 90% or more of the cost of that expansion will be paid by the federal government.
“CAHC is ready to work together with the Legislature and the LePage Administration to make sure the will of the people is respected,” Butterfield added. “Mainers have been taking part in this debate for six years. They understood exactly what was at stake and knew exactly what they were voting for. This result is unambiguous. It is long past time for Maine’s leaders to listen to your voters, do the right thing, and make sure these tens of thousands of Mainers are given the same opportunity you have: to keep themselves and their families healthy.”
