Maine Health Access Foundation Regional Forums

The Trustees and staff of the Maine Health Access Foundation, Inc. and the Maine Community Foundation would like to invite you to participate in one of six regional meetings that will focus on identifying strategic solutions to improving health care coverage and access in Maine. The dates and locations for these six open forums are below.

The Maine Health Access Foundation is a new private foundation created as the result of the sale of Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Maine (a non-profit health care insurer) to Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield (a for-profit health care insurer.) The Foundation’s mission is to promote affordable and timely access to comprehensive quality health care for every Maine resident. To carry out this mission, the Foundation will support strategic solutions to Maine’s health care needs, particularly for those who are medically uninsured and underserved, through grants and other programs.

In order to determine the best use of its charitable assets, the Foundation is required by its bylaws to assess the health care needs of Maine’s residents. Over the last six months, the Foundation has gathered information on the issue of health care coverage in Maine. This data, which will be presented in a forthcoming draft booklet, entitled a “Primer on Health Care Coverage in Maine”, is the first step in the Foundation’s assessment process. Modeled after a national primer on Americans without health insurance published in March 2001 by the Kaiser Commission on Medicaid and the Uninsured, this draft document answers six key questions and provides basic facts about access to health care coverage in Maine. The Foundation hopes this draft document stimulates and focuses the discussion and strategic thinking that we hope will arise from the regional forums.
